Sublimation transfers only work on 100% polyester fabric and sublimation coated products (mugs, tumblers, mousepads, coasters). They will not work on cotton, dark colours, or uncoated surfaces.
Sublimation Transfer: Quick Application Steps
Step 1: Prep and Clean Your Blank
Wipe the surface of your substrate (mug, tumbler, coaster) with a lint-free cloth and rubbing alcohol to remove oils or dust. For polyester apparel, use a lint roller. Any trapped debris will permanently ruin the ink gas transfer.
Step 2: Position the Mirrored Print
Place your sublimation transfer page face down against the prepared surface. Note: The transfer is printed in reverse/mirrored image format; it will cure correctly once pressed.
Step 3: Secure with Heat Tape
Use heat-resistant tape to tightly wrap and lock the paper flat against the surface. Crucial: Any shifting, loose paper, or air pockets will cause "ghosting," blurred edges, or faded patches.
Step 4: Apply Heat and Heavy Pressure
Place the secured blank into your dedicated mug press, tumbler press, or flat heat press.
- Standard Baseline Settings: 385°F to 400°F ($195^\circ\text{C}$ to $205^\circ\text{C}$) for 45 to 60 seconds (apparel/flat blanks) or 4 to 5 minutes (tumblers in a convection oven). Apply firm, maximum pressure.
Step 5: Hot Peel Instantly
Once the timer ends, immediately remove the blank using heat-resistant gloves. Quickly peel the sublimation paper away from the object in one smooth motion. Letting the paper sit on a hot cooling blank can cause secondary bleeding.
Pro Tips for Technical Precision:
- The Secondary Seal (Apparel): For polyester shirts, use a sheet of blowout paper or Teflon on top, and always run a quick 2-3 second repress to lock the ink fibers flat.
- Prevent Ink Bleed: Always place a blank sheet of butcher paper inside shirts or around tumblers to prevent gas ink from bleeding onto your press heating elements.
- Substrates Only: Sublimation ink will completely fail on 100% cotton or uncoated store-bought glass/ceramic. The object must have a poly-sublimation factory coating.
