Frequently Asked Questions

What temperature do you sublimate a mug at?

For a standard ceramic mug (11oz or 15oz) the recommended temperature is 380–400°F with medium pressure for 3–4 minutes. Glass mugs require slightly lower heat at 375–385°F for 4–5 minutes with light-medium pressure to avoid cracking. Stainless steel and travel mugs press best at 350–375°F for 2–3 minutes. All settings are included in the free chart above.

How long do you press a sublimation mug?

Press time varies by mug type. Ceramic mugs need 3–4 minutes, glass mugs 4–5 minutes, stainless steel and enamel mugs 2–3 minutes, tumblers 5–6 minutes, and convection oven pressing requires 12–15 minutes. Using the correct time prevents ghosting, fading, and ink bleed.

What pressure should I use for sublimation mugs?

Most mug types require medium pressure. Glass and frosted glass mugs use light-medium pressure to avoid breakage. Heavy pressure on glass mugs risks cracking during the press cycle. The chart includes pressure recommendations for every mug type covered.

Why is my sublimation mug coming out blurry or ghosted?

Ghosting is almost always caused by movement during or immediately after pressing. Secure your design with heat-resistant tape before pressing, and avoid moving the mug until it has cooled slightly. Fan cooling after pressing also helps prevent ink bleed by accelerating the cooling process evenly.

Can I sublimate a mug without a mug press?

Yes — a convection oven is a common alternative. Wrap the mug with heat-resistant tape to secure the design, then press at 375–400°F for 12–15 minutes. Results can vary compared to a dedicated mug press but are perfectly workable for small runs. The chart covers both methods.

What mugs can be sublimated?

Sublimation requires a polyester-coated surface to bond properly. Compatible mug types include ceramic, glass, frosted glass, enamel, stainless steel, and polymer-coated tumblers. Uncoated mugs will not hold sublimation ink. Always confirm your blank has a poly coating before pressing.

Is this sublimation chart really free?

Yes — completely free, no email required. Download it, print it, and keep it at your press station as a permanent reference. Visit Mugsie's Sublimation Resource Library for more free guides, templates, and tools.
